Position Title:   Science Academy & Biology/Chemistry Teacher                            Hours:   Full time

Position Summary:

The Academy of Science is a unique and unparalleled, collaborative education experience in which high achieving students are challenged to expand their intellect and to develop skills in scientific inquiry, critical thinking, problem solving and expression.  The Academy’s rigorous learning environment focuses on science, technology, arts, engineering and mathematics (STREAM), while fostering a culture of innovation based on leadership, social justice and serving our global community.  The teacher will collaborate with the Science Academy Director to coordinate curriculum, field trips, projects and competitions.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provides grade appropriate instructional program including:
  1. a) Lesson planning
  2. b) Classroom preparation
  3. c) Assessment of each student’s performance
  • May teach 5 classes:
  1. a)   A combination of Biology/Chemistry and possibly Science Academy classes (depending on qualifications
  • Supervises students, maintains an orderly classroom
  • On-line gradebooks/posting of grades through Haiku, Mater Dei Catholic High School’s Learning Management System
  • Designs classes, projects, labs and assessments in accordance with department and Science Academy guidelines
  • Participates in faculty meetings, school committees and in-services
  • Communicates promptly with parents
  • Attends other school functions and activities as necessary
  • Chaperones Science Academy fieldtrips and other duties as assigned


  • Must have a basic understanding and acceptance of Catholic School philosophy, goals and objectives
  • Must have necessary background and training in secondary education methods and subject areas
  • Must have an understanding of child development and skills necessary to relate to the students being taught
  • Must have appropriate control and discipline techniques, which will enhance the learning environment
  • Must work cooperatively with the school and staff
  • Excellent people skills and professional demeanor


Education & Experience:


  • Must have the following education training and experience:
  1. a) Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Science
  2. b) CA Credential and/or Master’s Degree Preferred
  3. c) Successful experience in high school student teaching or classroom teaching
  4. d) Knowledge in teaching 1:1 PC Laptop environment preferred
