Lord, teach me to be generous,
Lord, teach me to be generous,
to serve you as you deserve,
to give and not to count the cost,
to fight and not to heed the wounds,
to labor and not to look for any reward,
save that of knowing that I do your holy will.
Faith & Service
The Christian Service program, more than just a service hours requirement, is a call to serve others as taught by Jesus Christ “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mt 18: 45) at the same time encountering Christ in the face of one’s neighbor.
The program is developmental, guiding each student through four stages:
- Learning to reach beyond oneself to serve others.
- Learning that those in need or on the margins are no different from oneself, just living in different circumstances.
- Seeing and loving Jesus in the other and seeking the intrinsic goodness of love for others, especially the poor and sick.
- Developing a life mission of service to others through the dedication of one’s God-given talents to the building of God’s Kingdom of love and peace.
Freshman Service Requirement
Forget about me; I love you : “Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.” (Romans 12:10)
The goal of the freshman service program is to move from an “I “mentality to a “you/we” mentality as members of the Body of Christ. Engage our San Diego community as our family in God and support those who need the support, serving with dedication and love.

Sophomore Service Program
Men and Women for Others “He answered ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.’… But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, ‘And who is my neighbor?’ (Luke 10:27.29)
The goal for the sophomore service program is to continue the emphasis on love of neighbor as central to our Catholic identity, while breaking down any “us” and “them” distinction, as children of One Father.
Requirement: 15 hours of service, of which at least half must be service to the poor, the sick, the disabled, the elderly, the unborn, or the environment.

Junior Service Program
Christian Charity
Matthew 25 is very clear in saying that supporting and helping those most in need is encountering Jesus himself, “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did it to me.” The goal of Junior Year is, after the experience of developing kinship with others, is to build the mental, emotional, and spiritual capacity to encounter Jesus in the person of the poor, lost, hungry, or sick. The works of mercy are elevated beyond just good or even holy deeds to the very act of serving Jesus. The junior year student should expect not only to serve, but to grow personally through the experience.

Senior Service Program
Gifts and Talents in Service of God and Neighbor: : “His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’” (Matthew 25:21)
The goal of the senior service program is for seniors to use their individual gifts and talents in service of others. They will connect this to their Social Justice class through direct service to the needy, based on the seven areas of social justice.

Over 8,000 people in San Diego experience homelessness. 78% say they became homeless right here in our county. These are startling facts. The San Diego Rescue Mission is committed to making a difference and we would love you to join us. Our residents count on a consistent supply of nutritious food every day as they work on their recovery and rehabilitation. We served 230,190 meals in 2022. Where can YOU serve? We are looking for loving, compassionate, responsible people who will serve meals with sides of kindness, hope, and respect. Come join the fun. The hair nets are free 🙂
