What does my 8th grader need to apply to Mater Dei?
The admissions process at Mater Dei requires the High School Placement Test (HSPT), a formal interview and review of transcripts from 7th and 8th grade. Decision letters go out with scholarship and tuition assistance awards, if applicable, on March 1, 2022. Online enrollment opens on March 7, 2022 and the deadline to register is March 19, 2022.

What are all of the criteria that goes into the acceptance process?
We use a holistic approach that looks at a variety of factors. The Admissions Committee utilizes the data from the HSPT along with report cards and teacher recommendations to help determine the best possible course placement for incoming 9th graders.
How much is tuition?
Tuition is currently $18,210.
Does Mater Dei offer tuition assistance?
Yes, Mater Dei offers need-based tuition assistance to families who might otherwise not be able to afford full tuition. Priority will be given to students who have taken the entrance exam at Mater Dei Catholic High School in January 2022. Each award is made on a case-by-case basis.
Is tuition assistance different from financial aid?
No. These terms are interchangeable.

How do you determine tuition assistance eligibility?
Families apply for need-based tuition assistance through a third-party application called FACTS, which utilizes an algorithm to determine eligibility and the amount of tuition assistance awarded.
What is the High School Placement Test?
The High School Placement Test (HSPT) is a requirement for incoming 9th grade students seeking admission to Mater Dei Catholic High School as a freshman. The HSPT is scheduled for Saturday, January 22, 20212. The HSPT, by definition, helps in the placement of students into English and Math classes for the freshman year. There will not be an essay portion of the test this year.
What are the benefits of taking the HSPT at Mater Dei’s campus on January 22, 2022?
One of our key differentiators at Mater Dei is our robust merit-based scholarship program which allows students who take the HSPT on Mater Dei’s campus on January 22, 2022 an opportunity for a four-year scholarship based on their national score ranking. Mater Dei has the largest scholarship program of all the Catholic High Schools in San Diego County.
Last year alone, Mater Dei awarded 29 students either the Presidential (100% 4-Year Scholarship), Principal (75% 4-Year Scholarship) or Merit (50% 4-Year) Scholarship. Only incoming 9th graders are eligible for these scholarships. In total, Mater Dei has 124 students out of our total student body of 1034, who currently have been awarded a merit-based scholarship. Do we have to take the HSPT test at Mater Dei?
No. Mater Dei does accept HSPT scores from other schools throughout the county, state and country. However, taking the test on a different campus eliminates eligibility to receive a Mater Dei scholarship.
Do transfer students have to take the HSPT test?
No, they do not.
After my student completes the HSPT, what are the next steps?
If you have not done so already, you should schedule your student’s interview through SchoolAdmin. Interviews are planned for February 3, 2022 and time slots are available directly from your SchoolAdmin portal.
What does the interview process look like?
On February 3, 2022 from 4:00-6:00pm we will be conducting online interviews through Zoom. Interviews last about 15 minutes. Parents are welcome to join the interview meeting. The interview will provide an opportunity to get to know your student, learn about their interests and why they would like to attend Mater Dei. If you need to reschedule your interview, you may do so on your SchoolAdmin account or by contacting email@example.com. These interviews will not be recorded.
Do I need to submit my student’s report card?
Yes. There is a form called the Release of Information Form which needs to go to your school registrar/secretary in order for your student’s report card to be sent to our school.
Do I need to submit a letter of recommendation?
Sending a letter of recommendation is optional. One letter of recommendation is sufficient. This letter should come from someone outside of your family such as a pastor, current or past teacher or principal. You need to request your recommender to write and send the letter to Mater Dei admissions firstname.lastname@example.org. You may also forward the letter of recommendation to our admissions office.
I have completed all of my checklist items, now what?
Decision letters will be mailed the first week in March. The decision letter will contain a copy of your student’s HSPT results, scholarship or tuition-assistance award (if applicable) and vital information about the next steps regarding registering and securing your child’s space in the class of 2026.
Do you offer sports scholarships?
No. Offering sports scholarships is against CIF regulations.
Do you offer military discounts on tuition?
No. All tuition assistance requests go through our FACTS application and are based specifically on financial need of household.
How many students will you be accepting for Fall 2021?
We are looking for a freshman class of 290 students.
